Environment and Climate Change
Policy drivers
Working across the broad range of environmental services, M·E·L
Research is working to help meet the UK's commitment to a low
carbon economy and low carbon lifestyles. Our company's origins
trace back to the emerging environmental initiatives of the early
1980s, when we were active in a wide range of environmental
monitoring and evaluation projects, from methane monitoring, NOX
surveys, to ambient noise and environmental impact analysis.
Our current focus is the range of Defra pro-environment
behaviours that relate to future carbon reduction, centring on home
energy and water consumption, fuel poverty, short trip transport
modes, and the application of behaviour change and social marketing
approaches designed to trigger behaviour change. We evaluate
whether delivering behaviour change projects and evaluating
pro-environmental projects, demonstrates value for money, carbon
reductions and cost-savings. This aspect links closely to our
renowned national leadership in household waste prevention and
recycling.
We have also recently enhanced our support services to the
environmental protection and regulatory agencies, addressing the
need to ensure businesses are satisfied with local authority
regulatory services (NI182); ensuring food establishments comply
with food hygiene regulations (NI184); assessing the impact and
effectiveness of enforcement powers and fixed penalty notices in
environmental crime; and other environmental health services such
as pollution control. A further aspect of our environmental health
related services involves our specialist expertise in Private
Rented Sector (PRS) landlord research.
