Waste and Resources Management
Policy drivers
The coalition government's recent waste policy review marks
another milestone in the long history of M·E·L
Research's involvement in waste and resources management in
the UK. The commitment towards a zero waste economy and zero waste
behaviours means action on key priorities such as food and
organic waste reduction, and new waste prevention behaviours
amongst both householders and businesses. These are major areas of
our expertise. The coalition government also commits to
improving uptake of advanced municipal waste treatment
technologies including energy from waste, IVC, AD and MBT, as
well as continued roll-out of dry recycling services. Abolition of
LATS will also extend the municipal waste management focus
from household waste towards trade and SME business waste
services too.
The new agenda further strengthens the role M-E-L Research
can play in achieving these goals. Renowned nationally as the UK's
longest standing centre of waste management research excellence, we
are not just a survey agency - we offer a full-service
research and consultancy package. This covers municipal waste
compositional analysis, doorstep recycling and waste prevention
campaigns, participation monitoring and evaluation, social and
consumer research, HWRC user surveys, business waste surveys and
wider waste audits such as our long-running survey of the UK's
organics recycling industry for AfOR and WRAP. Our newly-formed
Organics Specialist Team is providing additional expertise in this
field.
We are regular 'thought leadership' contributors to the
Defra-funded biennial Waste Conference, and Framework Contractors
for WRAP's Local Government Services and Research and Evaluation
frameworks. As the UK's pioneers in municipal waste audits and
handsorting compositional analysis, we developed the UK's first
matched household interview survey and waste compositional analysis
(for the Environment Agency 1996), and WRAP's standard technique
for food waste analysis (2006).
For the waste management industry we also offer contract
compliance customer surveys, and Ofgem-recognised feedstock
analysis for WTE and other EfW plant. Based in Birmingham's Science
Park Aston, we are also uniquely renowned for the scientific rigour
of our high quality statistical analysis and projective
modelling.
