Waste Compositional Analysis and Participation Monitoring services

Waste Compositional Analysis

M·E·L Research is the UK's most experienced provider of precision grade municipal waste compositional analysis services. We were the first to develop modern compositional assay techniques, employing highly-skilled handsorting technicians to characterise the composition of the waste materials.

We currently have a national field team of around 30 waste analysis technicians, all of which are professionally supervised by experienced team leaders, working across the UK for local authorities, waste management and other organisations requiring waste analysis services.

Over the years, M·E·L has led important national developments in waste analysis techniques. These have included:

  • Development and field-testing of WRAP's definitive food waste analysis protocol
  • Undertaking the national compliance audit of direct marketing mail recycling rates to meet the industry's voluntary agreement with DEFRA
  • Providing complete waste analysis services within a single project to include all waste streams and the efficiency of separation facilities
  • Designing and carrying out analysis to assist the evaluation of the effectiveness of pilot food waste collections in Wales

We offer three main types of waste analysis service:

  •  Material recycling facilities feedstock and output analysis
  • Feedstock analysis of energy from waste plants
  • Waste material flow analysis of kerbside collected, HWRC and trade waste streams

Participation monitoring

Participation monitoring has become an established technique for measuring the performance of kerbside collection schemes using standard defined parameters which are outlined in the WRAP toolkit. Our experienced in-house monitoring team have successfully carried out a vast amount of projects across the country, varying in size and complexity. We are also able to offer an enhanced visual presentation of results, using our InSite GIS software. We can map the participation rates of the kerbside services by round and also produce a predicted participation map based on ACORN demographics gathered from the monitoring process.
